A hundred days before the American election, at least three issues are now in the spotlight: President Trump’s suggestion to postpone the election, whether the crisis triggered by the coronavirus persists until at least November 3rd, and the many demonstrations for racial justice.

Last Thursday (July 30th) in a message on Twitter, the Republican president said that widespread voting by mail could make this year’s election the “most inaccurate and fraudulent in history.” Trump did not provide evidence for the alleged fraud but justified a postponement of the election as a way of ensuring that people can “vote properly, safely and securely.” Yet, Trump has no authority to postpone the election without Congressional approval.

While Washington Post columnist Henry Olsen said that Trump’s suggestion is one of the most undemocratic ideas ever made by a president, Democrats see it as an attempt to distract the population from the problems facing the government.

Assuming the election on November 3rd is not postponed, Donald Trump will face an opponent perhaps more threatening than the Democrat Joe Biden — the economic figures. The coronavirus crisis necessitated extensive lockdowns in the United States, which caused the world’s largest economy to contract at the fastest pace since World War II in the second quarter and increased the country’s unemployment rate to 11% . According to the Federal Reserve (Fed), the crisis has caused “enormous economic and human difficulties” across the country.

Also, given the much greater attention on racial inequities since the death of black security guard George Floyd, the vote of black (13.4%) and Latin (18.5%) minorities may be decisive this election, and polls show these groups strongly favor Joe Biden.
