54 years old Monica Calazans is the first person to be vaccinated in Brazil.

The much awaited Butantan CoronaVac and Oxford /AstraZeneca (COVID-19) vaccines have been approved for emergency use in Brazil by Anvisa (The National Health Surveillance Agency) and the first person that got the CoronVac vaccine in Brazil is Monica Calazans, a 54 year-old resident of Itaquera, who works on the front line against COVID-19 at the instituto de infectologia Emílio Ribas.
“It is not just a vaccine. It is the resumption of a life that can be fair, without prejudice and with the guarantee that we will all have the same conditions to live with dignity, with health and well-being, ” said the nurse, who is obese, hypertensive and diabetic.

She was vaccinated by 30 years old Jessica Pires de Camargo, a disease control nurse and master of public health at Santa Casa de São Paulo who also got vaccinated later on.

The ceremony was witnessed by the Governor of São Paulo, Joao Doria who made a press conference to show how satisfied and glad he was after the approval by Anvisa and the application of the vaccine to the first person in Brazil right in São Paulo.

It is worthy to mention the first indigenous person vaccinated in Brazil is Vanuzia Santos, a nursing technician. She is a 50 years old resident of the multi-ethnic village Filhos Dessa Terra, in Guarulhos and also graduated in Social Assistance.

Later on, some front line health workers and doctors were also vaccinated in this first day.
